Garrison Starr Releases Superb ‘Girl I Used to Be’

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Garrison Starr, who once considered herself done with music, is back with a remarkably excellent new album, entitled Girl I Used to Be, her first LP in almost a decade. In 2017, she released her EP, What If There Is No Destination.

Produced by Neilson Hubbard and engineered by Danny Aldredge, Girl I Used to Be includes cowrites with Carly Paige, Katie Pruitt, and Dominique Arciero.

According to Garrison, “When I’m writing for myself, all that baggage is always there. I always have to navigate that regardless. But when I write with other people, they’re not bringing that baggage to the situation. I was able to access some pain, some sadness, some joy. I wouldn’t have been brave enough to walk into that dark corner by myself. I had to go there with somebody else.”

Encompassing nine-tracks, the album begins with “The Devil In Me,” written with Carly Paige, a track about which Garrison shares, “Honestly, it’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever been a part of writing. It feels so much like me. It feels like a bigger version of me.”

Opening on a strumming acoustic guitar topped by Garrison’s lush, redolent voice, the tune takes on smoldering melancholic colors, trembling with intimate colors and raw vulnerability. As the song concludes, glowing layers…
